Satnam Singh is a former NBA player now signed into All Elite Wrestling (AEW), an American professional wrestling promotion. He made Indian sports history in 2015 by becoming the first player of India to be drafted into the NBA.

How did Satnam Singh get into basketball?

Indian professional basketball player Satnam Singh Bhamara was first exposed to the game at a young age. On December 10, 1995, he was born in Punjab, India, in the little village of Ballo Ke. 

Singh was born into a farming family, and basketball coaches were immediately drawn to him because of his enormous height.

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) noticed him in 2010 while attending a basketball camp in his hometown. After realizing his potential, The BFI allowed him to relocate to the US to train and pursue a basketball career.

After accepting the offer, Satnam Singh relocated to Florida and enrolled at the esteemed IMG Academy, a sports training facility. To experience competitive basketball in the US, he also participated in the academy’s basketball program.

When the Dallas Mavericks selected Satnam Singh with the 52nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, he made NBA history by becoming the first player of Indian descent to be drafted. 

Despite receiving little playing time in the NBA, his journey inspired many aspiring Indian basketball players and increased awareness of the sport there.

Why did Satnam Singh leave the NBA?

Unfortunately, after testing positive for Higenamine beta-2-agonist, Satnam’s basketball career was cut short by a two-year ban imposed by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). 

Satnam has since entered professional wrestling by teaming up with All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Satnam Singh also stated that he has no plan for a comeback in the NBA.

Satnam’s career at AEW

All Elite Wrestling signed him on September 23, 2021. On the April 13, 2022, episode of AEW Dynamite, he made his television debut by attacking Samoa Joe and siding with Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt.

Out of 20 wrestling matches, Satnam has won 15 matches and lost 6 matches so far. His performance in AEW has been exceptional till now.

There has been much YouTube and real-life traffic in AEW from India since Satnam Singh joined AEW. Satnam also said that he wants to beat everyone at AEW and make his fellow Indians proud. 

Singh stated that he hadn’t picked up a basketball since his suspension in 2019. 

Singh claimed his basketball career was over, even though his mobile case features a photo of former Los Angeles Lakers player Kobe Bryant. He has coached at the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders camps in India and is still willing to mentor players there.

His dream is to become an actor, not a professional wrestler. In one way or another, his goal is to serve as a bridge for India once more.
